Remodeling and Additions for Newington Homes
Newington lies on the east shore of Great Bay, right next to Portsmouth. Past the stores on Woodbury Avenue, the town turns into quiet roads, coves, and woods. Some homes here are older Colonials, and many more went up in the 1980s and 1990s.
A house from those years can feel solid and still feel wrong. The kitchen is closed off, the baths still have the tile they were built with, or the rooms no longer match how you live.
Your Newington remodeler
Persson Construction is a remodeler based in Greenland, about 4 miles south of Newington. We work in one order: plan, then price, then build. The tough choices get made with you and the designer before the build starts, so fewer of them land on you once a wall is open.
From the first call to the finished room
First comes a fit call. We hear what you want to change, how you use the house, and what you hope to spend.
When the fit is right, planning starts under a Project Development Agreement. Trade days are part of it. Subcontractors come by, usually a trade or two at a time, and price the work from what they find.
The build itself runs on Cost Plus pricing. You see the actual costs for materials and subcontractors and the markup we add to them. Near the end, we walk the house with you and take care of the punch list, the list of last fixes.
Projects that suit Newington homes
A 1980s or 1990s house where several rooms need work at once is a match for whole-home remodeling. Doing all of it in one project means the walls get opened once.
If you need more room on a big lot, look at home additions. For an older Colonial, our historic renovations start with learning the frame and trim before changing them.
We also take on kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling as projects of their own. Book a fit call and tell us how you use the house today.
Our Newington Remodeling & Historic Renovations Services
Kitchen Remodeling
We remodel kitchens in the room you have, or add on when the room is too small. We plan each kitchen with the designer, then price it and build it.
Bathroom Remodeling
Primary baths, plus showers with a low curb or no curb at all. We also swap old Jacuzzi tubs for bigger showers.
Whole Home Remodeling
Two or more rooms done as one job, such as a kitchen and a bath. We plan and price the whole job before the build starts.
Home Additions
First-floor primary suites, bump-outs, and great rooms. We also build ADUs, like an apartment over a detached garage.
Historic Renovations
In a historic district, window sizes, siding, and trim come with rules we plan around. Many old houses outside the district need a lot of work too.

Newington, Then and Now
Newington began as part of Dover. Boundary fights among early settlers gave the area the name Bloody Point. The town was incorporated in 1764.
A state historical marker calls the town forest one of the oldest in America. Along the bay’s eastern shore, part of the old Pease Air Force Base is now the Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge, set up in 1992.
Newington had 811 people in the 2020 Census. The typical home here was built in 1982, and about one in five went up before 1940. About 86 percent of homes are lived in by their owners.
Our Greenland office is about 4 miles south of Newington. The town borders Portsmouth, where much of our work is.
Newington Remodeling & Historic Renovations FAQs
Can I build an addition on a Newington home near Great Bay?
Often, but the rules are tighter near the water. New Hampshire’s protected shoreland rules limit building, paving, and tree cutting within 250 feet of Great Bay and the Piscataqua. Some work needs a state shoreland permit.
Locally, the town’s building office handles permits, and the Newington Planning Department answers zoning and site plan questions. The Newington Conservation Commission reviews projects in or near wetlands and their buffers.
We check your lot and setbacks in planning. That way, you know how big an addition can be before the designer draws it.
What should I update first in a 1980s Newington home?
Start with a plan for the whole house, not a single room. In a 1980s home, the windows, insulation, kitchen, and baths often all need work, and some of that work shares the same walls. Doing two or more of those in one project is what we call whole-home remodeling.
Do you work on the older Colonials in Newington?
Yes. Older homes are a large part of what we do. An older Colonial needs its frame, windows, and trim understood before anyone changes them.
Newington has two local historic districts, and its Historic District Commission reviews changes to the outside of buildings in them. We look at all of this during planning, so fewer surprises wait for the build. See our historic renovations page for how we handle older homes.
